Elite Access Control Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide

Elite access control installation in Orlando typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether you need a standalone keypad or a full telephone-entry system with a gate controller. We stock Elite-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete most access control swaps the same day we arrive, since the wiring and mounting points are already in place. Most Orlando homeowners call us after a keypad goes dark after a storm, a card reader stops recognizing fobs, or an entry system works only when it wants to. If your Elite opener runs fine but the access control that tells it to open has quit, you’re in the right place.

One thing to know up front: Calder Gate Repair Orlando is an independent gate and access control specialist. We’re not affiliated with Elite, but we work on their systems constantly, and we know which parts interchange and which ones don’t.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has used a handful of access control platforms over the years, and the part you need depends on which generation your system is. The two most common in Orlando are the Elite 2000 series telephone-entry systems (the silver box with a raised keypad, often found at HOA gates and mid-sized communities in Dr. Phillips and Windermere) and the Elite SL-3000 / SL-5000 linear access controllers used on residential slide and swing gates. Older Elite keypads with a separate metal faceplate use a different mounting pattern than newer flush-mount models, which trips up a lot of DIY replacements.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to open the access control housing and check the label inside the door, not the front face. The model number there tells us the exact revision, and from that we can tell you whether your keypad uses a 4-wire or 5-wire harness and which card reader protocol it speaks. For Elite specifically, we recommend OEM parts when the access control is tied to a multi-unit or HOA system, because aftermarket boards sometimes send slightly different Wiegand timing signals and the gate controller rejects them. For standalone residential keypads, quality aftermarket equivalents are usually fine and save you $80 to $150.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad responds but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the access control is sending its signal but the relay output has failed, or the wiring between the keypad and the Elite opener’s control board has corroded. Florida humidity gets inside outdoor housings faster than you’d think, especially in Kissimmee and St. Cloud where afternoon storms are a daily summer event.
  • The system works intermittently after rain. Water intrusion into the housing or a failing seal is the most common cause we see in the Orlando area. The circuit board eventually develops corrosion on the relay contacts and stops closing the circuit reliably.
  • Card reader beeps but only accepts some fobs. That’s usually a failing antenna on the reader, not a programming problem. It still transmits but at reduced range, so fobs that used to read from six feet now only work if you hold them directly against the reader.
  • The keypad lights up but won’t accept codes. The membrane keypad itself wears out, especially on west-facing gates in the Orlando sun. The individual dome switches under each key lose their spring tension, so the controller never receives a clean digit.
  • Telephone-entry system calls the house but no one can hear you. On Elite 2000-series systems, this is often the audio amplifier chip or a damaged microphone lead. If the dial tone works but audio is one-way, the board is typically on its way out.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Elite access control installation actually costs in the Orlando market, based on jobs we’ve done across Orange and Seminole counties.

  • Standalone keypad replacement (residential): $450 – $650 installed, including the new keypad or receiver, wiring verification, and programming.
  • Card reader or proximity reader replacement: $350 – $550 installed, depending on reader type and whether we’re adding fobs to the system.
  • Full telephone-entry system replacement (Elite 2000-style): $1,100 – $1,400 installed, including the new unit, mounting, wiring, and programming the directory.
  • Access controller board swap: $500 – $750 installed, including the board and configuration to match your existing Elite opener.

The spread in those numbers comes down to how much wiring we’re able to reuse versus replace, and whether the housing itself is still watertight. Every quote we give in Orlando is a written price before any work starts. The number on the invoice matches the number on the quote. That’s not a courtesy, it’s how Calder Gate Repair operates. Every installation also carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the access control fails within a year of our install, we come back and make it right at no charge. No prorated warranty, no service call fee, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control work on an Elite system sits in that awkward middle ground. It’s not high-tension like a gate spring, and we’re not going to tell you it’s life-threatening to open the housing. But the electrical side deserves respect. The access control taps into the opener’s low-voltage control circuit, and if you short the wrong leads together, you can fry the Elite opener’s main board. That turns a $500 keypad replacement into a $900 board repair because the control circuit wasn’t isolated properly.

The safe checks you can do yourself: confirm the breaker is on, make sure the access control has power, and visually inspect the housing for obvious water damage or burned components. If everything looks fine but the system still won’t cooperate, that’s the time to call (850) 338-6230. Nico Alvarez and the crew can usually diagnose an Elite access control failure in under an hour, and we text you a written quote before anything gets taken apart. If we can’t explain the problem in plain English, we don’t get to charge you for it.
